Continuing Professional Development (CPD) can be defined as ‘continuous training and education designed to ensure that professionals maintain a high standard of service and efficiently adapt to advancements within their chosen field. The main goal of the CPD program is warranting quality health service by competent health professionals and linking the continuing education unit (CEU) with license renewal requirements.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) of Ethiopia is committed to ensuring the quality and standards of health services in the Country. It is evident that capable health work force is essential to continually improve the quality of health service delivery in the country. The competency of health professionals has to be continually developed through standardized in-service training.

Health professionals must maintain, update and enhance their knowledge, skills, and attitude to adequately deliver quality health care. This is particularly important due to a changing disease pattern in which diseases that had been eradicated are now re-emerging, as well as an increase of non-communicable diseases. There is a need for CPD to maintain professional competence in an environment of numerous challenges, rapid organizational changes, information technology, increasing public expectations and demand for quality and greater accountability.

Therefore, one of the methods to realize protected and responsible health care professionals that contribute to the enhancement of the health care system is having a full-blown involvement in CPD. Basically, CPD enables professionals to stay sharp, versatile and up to date. Aside from the extra responsibility that comes with a job in healthcare, there is also a huge amount of new data and information that medical professionals are continually required to process and apply, often at a rapid pace. It is integral for those in the medical sector to never become set in their ways and always be ready to adapt to changes that can dramatically affect the way in which their jobs are performed.
